GOALKEEPER Joe Day is happy to put talks about his future on hold until Newport County AFC are safe from relegation.

Day has played a major part in County’s revival under caretaker manager Michael Flynn, keeping four clean sheets in his last five games.

The Exiles have won six of Flynn’s 10 matches in charge to move two points clear of the drop zone with two games to play.

Victory at Carlisle United on Saturday will ensure they are safe as long as Hartlepool United don’t beat relegation rivals Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road.

“The main thing everyone is focusing on is making sure Newport County are in the League next year,” said Day, who is one of a number of players out of contract this summer.

“That is the main focus for everyone at the club and once we’ve secured our status I think then talks about next season can start.

“I’m more than happy with that. I really just want to keep Newport in the League, secure our League status and then focus on next year and worry about that after that.

“I’ve just got to stay focused on the task in hand.

“I play for Newport County and I want to make sure we stay in the League.”

Day, the longest serving player at the club having joined in 2014, is confident that safety can be secured but he knows that there is still much work to do.

“It’s been an eventful season and from where we were with 12 games remaining – 11 points adrift – to where we’ve got ourselves now it’s been an unbelievable effort,” said the 26-year-old.

“But like the manager said there’s nothing been achieved yet.

“We’ve got to continue it and finish these last two games off well. The manager has hammered that home.

“After the game last week I think the celebrations were warranted because we’d got out of the bottom two for the first time since November and put ourselves in a position where it’s in our own hands.

“But we’re all aware that we need to finish the job.”
