MICHAEL Flynn will be confirmed as the new permanent manager of Newport County AFC at a 10am press conference tomorrow.

Flynn guided his hometown club to a remarkable Great Escape from relegation with a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Notts County on Saturday evening.

The Exiles were 11 points from safety when Flynn took over as caretaker manager on March 9 but, after seven wins in their final 12 games, they finished two points clear of the drop zone.

Chairman of operations Gavin Foxall said after the match that Flynn had done a “phenomenal job” and the club will officially announce the 36-year-old as permanent boss tomorrow.

“I’m talking to them tomorrow so I’m sure you’ll know more after that,” Flynn told the Argus this afternoon.

“We’ll have a chat. I was winding Gavin up on Saturday, telling him I’ve had a couple of offers already.

“We’ve got a great relationship. We’re open and honest with each other and that’s how it’s got to be.”

Foxall told BBC Radio Wales this morning: “We just need to sort a few things out with him.

“I would have thought it would be very difficult for any of the directors to walk around Newport if Michael didn't get the job.

“Michael has put himself in the position where he has shown what he can do with those around him as well.

“I suspect we will be making an announcement this week.”

Flynn wants to keep coach Wayne Hatswell and first team management consultant Lennie Lawrence alongside him in the dugout.

“Lennie and Wayne are part of my team and I’d love them to be here with me,” he said. “We come together and we’ll stay together.”

And he will discuss player contracts when his own future is sorted out.

“I think it would be right to wait because if I’m not sorted then who is going to be their manager – they might not want to stay for somebody else,” he added.

“We’ll have a conversation with a few players this week and hopefully we’ll get some good news on a couple of them.

“I don’t think there’s got to be a mass clear-out. We need some quality in certain areas.

“Having the top scorer with seven goals for the season is nowhere near good enough, so we’ve got to address that area.

“But we’re quite solid everywhere else, if I’m honest.

“We’re having all sorts of names thrown at us already so let’s get it sorted and then we can start building for next season.”

The coaching staff and players enjoyed a celebration in the city centre on Saturday night.

“I was obviously being the mature one, the responsible one – I was making sure the players were behaving themselves, which they were,” said Flynn.

“They had a good night and they deserved it. But it was special that the fans had such a good night too.

“They were all out in force on Saturday and they really looked after all the boys.

“It was unbelievable. We walked in the pub and they were all singing my name and singing the players’ names.

“It was a great feeling and I can’t thank the players enough because they’ve really pulled off a Great Escape.”
