NEWPORT County AFC boss Mike Flynn has expressed his delight with Tom Owen-Evans' decision to pen a new two-year deal at Rodney Parade.

The 20-year-old played a big part in the Exiles’ escape from relegation this season, including a stunning goal in the team’s 1-0 victory over Exeter City on April 8.

Not only did that strike give County a crucial three points in their bid to beat the drop, it was also midfielder Owen-Evans’ first in senior football.

The fans’ favourite, a product of the club’s academy, thought he had opened his account against Morecambe some four months earlier.

His first-half effort gave the Exiles the lead in that clash at Rodney Parade on December 10 but there was anguish for the midfielder when the match had to be abandoned at the break.

“I am delighted that Tom has extended his stay with us,” said Flynn, who was installed as the club’s new permanent first-team manager this week.

“Tom has really come of age over the course of the 2016/17 season and if he continues to work hard he will have a very good future.”

Owen-Evans added: “I am delighted to sign for another two years at Newport County and am looking forward to working with the gaffer, Lennie (Lawrence) and Hats (Wayne Hatswell).

“After a great end to the 2016/17 season, I believe we now have the momentum to have a really successful year next year.”
