DEFENDER Jamie Turley’s time at Newport County AFC looks to be at an end after he agreed a season-long loan move to National League club Boreham Wood.

The 27-year-old signed a two-year contract with County in the summer of 2016 after leaving Eastleigh but his debut season at Rodney Parade was ruined by injury.

Turley made only seven appearances, scoring the winner at Leyton Orient last August, before a knee problem stalled his progress.

After surgery last November the former Salisbury and Forest Green Rovers player spent the rest of the campaign working his way back to fitness.

Turley finally returned to action in pre-season friendlies against Undy Athletic, Chippenham Town, Gloucester City and Northampton Town last month.

But Mark O’Brien, Mickey Demetriou and Scot Bennett are all ahead of him in the pecking order in central defence.

And, with teenagers Jay Foulston and Ben White added to the squad in the past week, manager Michael Flynn has decided he can do without Turley’s experience.

In a statement the Exiles said: “The club would like to wish Jamie and Boreham Wood FC all the best for the 2017/18 season.”

Turley told the Boreham Wood official website: “I am really excited and I am really looking forward to getting going.

"Boreham Wood are an ambitious club, with an ambitious manager and it ticked a lot of boxes for me.

“I believe that I can bring pace and power to the side, and I know the league very well because I have spent a lot of time there.

“I just want to get back out there playing and I can hopefully do well enough to get selected, because I haven’t got a right to go straight into the team.”

Having spent a season in the Football League, Turley says he is desperate to help Boreham Wood fight for a place in the division.

“I obviously haven’t trained yet, but this seems like a very good group and if everyone can pull in the same direction then we can have a successful season," he added.

“Having now played in the Football League, it has given me the hunger to get back to the division.

“I have had a taste for it now, I want to be in the Football League. I started the first six or seven games before I needed the operation and now I want to earn a place back in the division.”

Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard said: “He is a very experienced centre half at this level, he has 150 odd games under his belt from the likes of Forest Green and Eastleigh, it was a great fit for the club,” Garrard declared.

“He brings with him a wealth of experience, he is accustomed to the system and the shape that we want to play and that will be big for the club.

“The timing of the deal is perfect, because it gives us a couple days before the start of the season to bring him up to speed with what we are doing.

“I remember how powerful and fast he was for Eastleigh, he will add another dimension to the team and he will allow us play the football that we want to play.”
