MANAGER Michael Flynn praised an "outsanding" performance from his Newport County AFC side as they progressed to round two of the Carabao Cup with a shock 2-0 win at Southend United last night.

Two second-half goals from loan star Shawn McCoulsky settled the tie at Roots Hall and ensured County go into Thursday night's second round draw.

"I’m delighted," said the Exiles boss. "I thought they were outstanding from start to finish and it’s always nice when the opposition coach says ‘well deserved’ to you after the match.

"I’m really pleased because there were a few fringe players who came in and really put themselves in the frame for selection on Saturday.

"I thought we should have had a penalty as well. I thought it was a dead cert and I’m sure if it was the other way it would have been given but I’m just pleased we’re through to the next round."

The second-round ties will be played in the week beginning August 21, meaning the Exiles will be away from home.

The new pitch is due to be laid at Rodney Parade today but it will not be ready to stage a match until the League Two clash with Chesterfield on August 26.
