BRENTFORD rising star Reece Cole has joined Newport County AFC on loan until January.

The 19-year old midfielder made his Championship debut in March after impressing for the Bees’ B team, netting six goals in 24 appearances.

And Cole has shone in pre-season for Brentford, scoring twice against Aldershot Town and finding the net with a fine free kick against Oxford United.

He is seen as a potential star of the future by manager Dean Smith and recently signed a three-year extension keeping him at the club until 2020.

The Exiles have beaten strong competition for the teenager’s signature.

“I’m really pleased to get Reece in,” said County manager Michael Flynn.

“He offers good competition in midfield and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do and looking forward to him fighting for a place in the starting line-up.”

Cole hopes the move will allow him to get some regular first team football under his belt.

“The gaffer really sold Newport County AFC to me,” he said.

“He said he was going to be playing youth and there's obviously a few experienced pros in here as well so hopefully it will be a good mixture."

Cole made his Bees bow as a substitute in a victory over Nottingham Forest in March.

But, despite catching the eye with his friendly performances, he knows regular minutes will be hard to come by with the likes of Ryan Woods and Josh McEachran ahead of him in the pecking order.

Speaking to GetWestLondon.co.uk last month, Cole said he knows there is room for improvement to force his way into the Brentford match day squad on a regular basis.

He said: “The last few weeks have been good but there's a lot more room for improvement.

“The goals are good and it's good to get my name out a bit more but there's a lot more room for improvement.”

Cole, who turns 20 in February, has been at the club for five years, having supported the side from the terraces as a youngster.

And he has seen the standard at Griffin Park only improve over that time, meaning he has to work even harder to earn a spot in the side.

“It's hard because you know the standard is getting better,” he said.

“You can see the squad this season is so high and you know you need to be at that level or higher.”

The midfielder added: “My first thought is to get as many first team games as possible wherever it is.

“A loan may be suitable for me but it needs to be the right team and right for the two clubs.”
