FORMER Premier League manager Harry Redknapp is helping out Yeovil Town manager Darren Way ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Newport County AFC but he’s unlikely to be at Rodney Parade.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United boss visited Yeovil yesterday as part of a new role in which he will be offering advice and guidance to Way as he looks to help improve results at Huish Park.

The 70-year-old met the coaching staff and the players and spoke to them having seen them train.

Way insisted that the presence of Redknapp will not undermine his position as manager of the club and he is not feeling any added pressure as a result of him being around.

“I’m fortunate enough that he’s come out and announced that he wants to work with me so it’s fantastic news,” Way told Somerset Live.

“Harry’s just come in to help me out and it’s good to have a pair of eyes and ears with that experience because he’s done 1,500 games and he’s an elite manager.

“I’m 37 years of age, I’m humble, I’m honest enough to know that I don’t know everything and to have his advice in one of the most ruthless environments in the leadership of professional football, I’d be a fool not to take it.”

He added: “I don’t want to put Harry under pressure to say he's got to be there at every game because obviously, he has commitments as well.

“All I can say is that he’s been very open and honest with me to say we’re going to try and create a good working relationship – he's a fantastic mentor.

"There’s more to football than just being stood in the technical area. If he can help me with my family, the media and scouting, he’s a great tool to have for my development."

The short trip to Newport will mark Way’s 100th game as Yeovil manager since he replaced Paul Sturrock in 2015.

His record in that time is 30 wins, 35 draws and 34 defeats and Exiles boss Michael Flynn is full of respect for his opposite number tomorrow.

“I hope he’s not celebrating at 4.50pm but it’s good that Darren’s got 100 games under his belt,” said Flynn.

“He’s Yeovil through and through and he’s a young manager.

“It’s tough because I don’t suppose they’ve got the biggest of budgets but he’s hanging on in there and giving it a go.

“Obviously I’ve seen the reports with Harry Redknapp coming in as well,” he added.

“That doesn’t change anything unless Harry’s going to put his boots on and go up front.

“Harry’s got a wealth of experience. I’m not too sure how much he knows about League Two so it’s going to take him a few weeks to get familiar with the league and the players.

“But he’s a well-known character, a very respected manager and I’m sure he’ll be a lot of help to Darren.”

South Wales Argus:

Way says his side will be prepared for the threat posed by the long throws of former Glovers midfielder Ben Tozer (above).

“We know a lot about Newport and at the same time they know a lot about us,” said Way.

“They have scored 57 per cent of their goals from set-pieces.”

When asked about dealing with Tozer’s throw-ins, he said: “It’s about your body language in your approach – you’ve got to be aggressive and get to the ball first. The most important thing is not to give away throw-ins.”

Way also revealed his surprise that Matty Dolan, who left Huish Park to join County in the summer, has not started a match since September 16.

“We tried to keep Matty Dolan but unfortunately lost him to our rivals. Financially they’re obviously doing ok,” he added.

“I don’t think I dropped Matty once but I’m not their manager.”
