NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn was frustrated by the number of chances that his side missed as they went down to a 2-1 defeat to Swansea City under-21s in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Flynn made seven changes and gave 16-year-old defender Jay Foulston his first start as County dominated for much of the match.

But Kenji Gorre gave the visitors the lead on the break after 70 minutes.

Shawn McCoulsky levelled for the Exiles five minutes later before a Foulston own goal on 82 minutes handed the Swansea youngsters victory.

The defeat, their second in the competition, means Flynn’s men cannot progress beyond the group stages.

“I thought we played some really good football,” said Flynn.

“We cut them open, we created two v ones and played through the middle of them.

“But, again, we’re having to create 15 to 20 chances to score one.

“They’ve got to start to get a lot more ruthless because it’s starting to get on my nerves now.”

On the winning goal, the Exiles boss added: “It’s come off young Jay Foulston (above), who I thought was outstanding for a 16-year-old in his first start in professional football.

“I thought he was brilliant, as were a lot of them. There were a lot of good performances.

“We’ve lost to an own goal and a counter-attack. The goals we conceded and the amount of chances that we’re missing are the disappointing things for me.”

After a 2-0 defeat at Forest Green Rovers in August, County again missed out on the £10,000 prize money for a win and £5,000 for a draw.

“I never want to lose football matches,” said Flynn.

“There’s money at stake for the club and I think you saw with the performance the boys put in and with the amount of first teamers that did play that we took this game seriously.

“I’m disappointed that we lost because I felt we were the better team by quite a bit.”
