MICHAEL Flynn says the 4-0 rout of Forest Green Rovers is the best performance of his reign as Newport County AFC manager.

Padraig Amond gave County a 2-0 lead at The New Lawn with two close-range finishes after 15 minutes and 41 minutes.

And Scot Bennett and substitute Shawn McCoulsky ensured that there would be no fightback from the hosts with killer goals in the 78th and 86th minutes.

“What an away performance that was! The boys were outstanding,” said Flynn.

“It was a little bit of a slow start in the first 10 minutes but after that it was all one-way traffic and the boys were brilliant.

“I’ve been asking them to take their chances and they’ve done that. They were ruthless.

“We could have had a few more, if I’m being a little but picky, but the boys were outstanding and I don’t think we looked like conceding.

“It was arguably the best performance since I took charge,” he added.

“I think Notts County on the last day of the season is always going to be the best result, just because it meant so much to the club and to the city of Newport.

“But that was a solid performance today.”

The win lifts County to sixth in the League Two table but Flynn is focusing on Tuesday’s home clash with Colchester United rather than talk of a promotion challenge from his side.

“I’m not too bothered about what people say about us,” he said.

“It’s nice to get the plaudits for the players and the fans but I’m not worried.

“We’ve got to keep doing what we set out to do, keep doing the horrible side of the game, keep playing our football – we’re playing a good brand of football now – and we’ll see where it takes us.”
