NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn believes his team delivered a “faultless” performance as they hammered Forest Green Rovers 4-0 on Saturday.

Two first-half strikes from Padraig Amond and late goals from Scot Bennett and substitute Shawn McCoulsky sealed an emphatic win at The New Lawn.

The three points saw County climb to sixth in the League Two table ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with Colchester United.

And Flynn was very happy to see his side finally find the ruthlessness that he has demanded.

“I’m delighted with our performance,” said the Exiles boss.

“We played some good football, we created lots of chances, our set-play delivery was good, the defending was good and the talking was good. They were faultless.”

Flynn reserved special praise for Bennett, who retained his place in favour of fit-again Mark O’Brien.

“I wanted to keep the same team because I felt the boys were that good last weekend I thought they deserved to start again,” he said.

“It was a big decision to leave Mark O’Brien out but Scot Bennett has been excellent in the last two.

“Everybody makes mistakes and he was disappointed in himself [at the start of the season].

“But he’s very switched on. He’s a very good professional and he’s someone I’ve got a lot of time for.

“He’s got ability and I’ve told him that.

“He’s going to have frustrating times, as are other players, but the way he’s going at the minute it will take a lot of for him to come out of the team.

“I’m delighted for him because he’s been patient and he’s been a real good team player.”

Amond is now the club’s top scorer with six goals since his arrival from Hartlepool United in August.

“I chased Podge all summer and that’s why,” said Flynn.

“He’s got six goals now. He’s the club’s top scorer and our highest scorer last season only had seven so if he doesn’t beat that then I’ll probably release him!”

And McCoulsky is level with Frank Nouble on five goals after scoring his second of the week as he headed in Dan Butler’s cross four minutes from time.

“I put Shawn on and I told him he’d score,” added the boss. “He’s got five goals now.

“He’s raw, he’s got lots to learn but he’s getting in the right places and he’s scoring goals.

“He gives us another option to come off the bench.”

Colchester slipped to 16th in the table after a 1-0 home defeat to Carlisle United on Saturday and Flynn hopes they will be beaten again tomorrow – his 37th birthday.

“They lost but we’ve got to be on our mettle again and hopefully the boys will get me a birthday win,” said the manager.

The Exiles will learn their FA Cup first round opponents tonight.

Flynn’s men will be ball number 29 in the draw, which takes place at around 7.10pm.

The first round ties will take place over the weekend November 3 to November 6, with winning clubs receiving £18,000 from the FA’s prize fund.
