NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn has played down the prospect of winger Lamar Reynolds going out on loan next month.

Reynolds has made just five starts since his summer move from non-league Brentwood Town and Flynn was not impressed with his substitute appearance against Carlisle United last week.

“He’s got a lot to learn,” was all the manager said when asked about the 22-year-old’s performance.

But, asked if he thought Reynolds would benefit from a loan move in January, the Exiles boss said: “I’m not too sure.

“I think him being in amongst us day in and day out [is good for him].

“At one point you think he can win you the game on his own but there were couple of points last week where he could have cost us the game.

“People might think I’m being a little bit harsh but there were two or three things he did when he came on that we got counter-attacked on and he’s just got to learn that part of the game.

“I’ve had a chat with him and I’m not criticising him to be horrible.

“I’m giving him some encouragement and helping him improve his game off the ball to add to what he can do on the ball.

“Once he does that he’s got a bright future because I’m a big fan of his.

“He knows that,” added Flynn. “He only had to read the Argus last week to see that.

“And just because he did one or two things that I didn’t like on Saturday it doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s a good player. He’s just got to learn.

“He had a bit of time on Saturday and he’s a talent, he’s exciting and you can see why the crowd like him, but you can also see why he hasn’t been playing.”

Flynn has already put plans in place for the January transfer window but he admits he’s still not secured the future of loan stars Shawn McCoulsky with Bristol City and Ben White with Brighton & Hove Albion.

“It’s not quite sorted and it is a worry until it’s done and dusted,” he said.

“I’m in good contact with both clubs and I’m positive but unless it’s done then you can never relax in football.

“I know what I want in January,” he added. “Whether I get it or not is a different story.

“We’ve got a budget here that we’ve got to work to and stick to and there will have to be players who go out to get others in.

“And I’ll only bring in the players who I know will be right on the pitch and off the pitch because we’ve got a tight group here and I don’t want to be upsetting that either.”
