NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn felt his players proved a point as they claimed a first home win since January with a 2-1 victory over Swindon Town at Rodney Parade.

Goals from Padraig Amond and Ben Tozer put County in charge at the break against Phil Brown’s play-off hopefuls.

Swindon pulled one back just after the hour mark when substitutes Dolan McDermott and Phil Mullin combined before Wales youth international Rollin Menayese was shown a second yellow card.

The former Cardiff City youngster, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but raised in Newport, was sent off on 66 minutes and substitute Frank Nouble and Tozer missed late chances to make the win more comfortable.

“I thought we were absolutely superb in the first half,” said Flynn, who saw his side climb to 12th in League Two - 10 points off the top seven with two games in hand.

“The players were back to what we do well and the things we work on in training.

“They did everything we asked of them and it should have been a couple more at half-time.

“It was another poor goal that we conceded and we didn’t kill them off even though we had enough chances to make it more convincing – maybe four or five.

“And I know they had 10 men for half an hour but even when they had 11 men we were the better side by far and on the whole it was a very good performance.

“It was a very important win for a great group of players who have given their all this season for this football club.”
