NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn admits he was embarrassed by the 6-0 home defeat to Yeovil Town and he expects a big improvement at Tranmere Rovers.

Flynn again paid tribute to the clinical way the Glovers exploited County’s mistakes at Rodney Parade but he believes it was a freak result.

And he’s backing his players to prove that by eradicating the individual errors and earning a positive result at Prenton Park on Saturday.

“There was nobody more embarrassed after the game than me,” said the Exiles boss as he reflected on the Yeovil defeat.

“It would have been easy to start questioning things but the bottom line is that we made a lot of mistakes in the game.

“I’ve looked back at all of the goals we’ve conceded and there were some glaring errors so there is work for us to do and we hope to improve.

“But when I looked at the table afterwards and we were third it’s reassuring to see how well we’ve done before that.

“We’re going to have sticky periods this season. I said it when we were winning and I said when we lost that we’ll have good periods.

“It’s League Two and even though they looked like world-beaters against us I’m sure Yeovil will have their bad days as well.

“I’m not getting too down and I definitely didn’t get too carried away when we beat Oldham.

“It is what it is. We need to keep concentrating on our end goal, which is what we will do.

“And we need a reaction now at the weekend and a much-improved performance because it’s going to be tough up there.”

Flynn insists he and everyone else at the club has learned lessons from last weekend.

“We’ve all looked at it,” he said. “I’ve looked at myself, the staff have looked at themselves and it’s just one of those days where everything went wrong.

“I’ve watched the first goal back and there are nine individual errors that led to it out of a team of 11.

“It was a freak result but I don’t want to take anything away from Yeovil. They counter-attacked us at pace and they took their chances.

“They had eight on target and scored six so it’s very efficient from them.

“Yeovil have improved a lot and they’ve been able to do that because they’ve had a bit more finances given to them and Darren Way would be the first one to tell you that.

“He’s ridden the storm of having low budgets and now he’s able to put together a squad that he really feels can do something.

“And if they play like they did against us and punish teams like they did then they’ll be up there this season.”

Flynn added that his team could have avoided a hammering if they’d opted for a different approach in the second half last week.

“If you’re 3-0 down at half-time in front of a big crowd there are three things you can do,” he explained.

“You either try to shut up shop and do damage limitation and try to get a half respectable 3-1 defeat.

“You do nothing and hope for the best, which is not something that I think would have been right.

“Or you try to change it and get back into the game.

“When you’re at home it’s very difficult to go defensive and just look like you’re trying to stay in the game. I want to go out and win every game.

“People might say that’s naïve but nobody would have thought so many players would make so many mistakes in the game.”
