WITH 100 days to go before the 2016 Olympics, we caught up with Abergavenny cyclist Becky James.

In her own words, the double world champion tells us how she's faring on her Road to Rio.

"It was incredible to win a keirin bronze medal at the World Track Championships in London – I can’t even describe how good it felt!

"I know it was only bronze but it really felt like a gold to me. I felt like the whole team around me, my family, close friends and everyone who supported me through my injury earned a piece of it. It will be a medal I will always cherish and remember.

"It is so good being back racing again. If someone had asked me just over a year ago how I was feeling, I’d say I could never imagine racing again.

"Now to be back racing at a world level is what I enjoy most and I’m loving every minute.

"I’ve learned a lot about myself over the past two years but the most important thing I’ve realised is how lucky I am to do what I do and to be happy and appreciate it every day.

"It has made me more determined than ever. No training will ever be as hard as what I went through last year, so I want to enjoy every minute of the journey.

"Heading into 2016, I was obviously hoping for a much better year than last, but it didn’t start quite the way I had hoped it would.

"My first event was the last Track World Cup of the season in Hong Kong where I wanted to show some form, but really disappointingly, I didn’t perform to the level I expected.

"I did a 200m time trial and then I got knocked out in the first round of the sprint. I was devastated and really upset as I was pinning my hopes that my form was coming back.

"After Hong Kong, as soon as we got back to Manchester I knuckled down and managed to turn things around.

"I really started to see daily progress, I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I know I was working extra hard.

"Then in the five weeks leading up to the World Championships everything went perfectly and I could see my form coming back.

"This helped me remain positive and happy so both physically and mentally I was in a really good place – it certainly paid off at the World Championships!

"My aim now is just to stay fit and healthy and train as hard as I possibly can to get selected for the Olympics Games.

"I have a few races and training camps over the next two months and then it will be down to the selection panel in June before I know whether I have done enough to warrant a place on the team.

"It would mean absolutely everything for me to be selected for Rio because it has been a tough old few years.

"Missing the London 2012 Olympics, then the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, I really don’t want to miss Rio. "The Olympics is the one thing on my list that I haven’t done."
