ALL bar two of the WRU National Cup quarter-final berths could be taken up by clubs from Gwent if results go their way this weekend.

Championship leaders Pontypool’s last-16 home clash with Carmarthen Quins tomorrow is getting the television treatment, and it’s a game the hosts will fancy winning.

Quins, who had a bye through to the second round, may be a division above Poo-ler but they will be aware of the home side’s liking for cup scalps.

A bumper crowd is set to gather at Pontypool Park for the Quins encounter, aided by the fact that the hosts have offered all fans free entry to the fixture.

Meanwhile, Greg Woods takes charge of his first match as Ebbw Vale head coach as the Steelmen travel to the Brewery Field in Bridgend.

Ebbw dumped cup holders RGC 1404 out of the competition on January 6 as they continued their good run of form since the departure of former head coach Lee Davies.

Bridgend coasted home against Championship basement boys Glynneath to reach the last 16, cantering to a resounding 48-0 away win.

Woods ended a 15-year spell as Cross Keys chief earlier this month when Pontypridd were beaten 21-16 on an emotional afternoon at Pandy Park.

Keys themselves have an excellent chance of progressing tomorrow, with Championship outfit Bedlinog visiting Gwent to take on Scott Matthews’ troops.

Beddau pushed Ebbw all the way in the cup last season and will hope to do the same and more when they welcome Bedwas tomorrow.

Bedwas eased to a 43-0 hammering of Narberth to make round two, a result which gave the Bridge Field side a boost after some indifferent league form.

Bargoed also have a great chance of reaching the quarters as they host Rhydyfelin, the conquerors of Newbridge.

The last of the ties involving a Gwent club takes place on Sunday when Newport tackle Aberavon at Rodney Parade.

Black and Ambers fans have been starved of a decent cup run in recent years, with their last triumph in the final coming in 2001.

Meanwhile, in tomorrow’s other clashes, Merthyr go to Cardiff and Llandovery entertain Llanelli.
