Fernando Llorente broke his Tottenham goal duck as Mauricio Pochettino’s side breezed past Apoel Nicosia 3-0 in their Champions League clash at Wembley.

The Spaniard, making his 17th appearance for Spurs since his £14million switch from Swansea, finally got off the mark with a classy finish in the 20th minute.

Son Heung-min grabbed a second before half-time and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou added a late third as much-changed Spurs, already assured of topping Group H, strolled into the last 16.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino: “(On Llorente’s goal) It’s important for him. When you are a striker you need to feel the net. Of course players need time to adapt, when you arrive at a new team with no pre-season you need time to find your best level. It’s difficult to play 20 or 30 minutes, it’s important for him to feel he can cope for 90 minutes. He is a player who is going to help the team a lot. He has been helping a lot but now with more confidence and belief he is going to help more.”

Apoel coach Giorgos Donis said: “It was a fantastic experience, this trip was wonderful. You see a different level and you see your place in that. Our fans were amazing, we didn’t give them the result they wanted but it was magical to see them here.”

The Spanish striker grabbed Tottenham’s opener and set up Son for a classy second. A fine display from Harry Kane’s understudy.

Moment of the match

It has been a long time coming – 17 appearances in fact – but when Llorente finally got off the mark it came in style. Serge Aurier’s cross was behind the former Juventus frontman but in one fluid moment he swivelled, shot and the ball was in the net.

View from the bench

As expected Kane, Christian Eriksen, Kieran Trippier and Hugo Lloris were left out of the Spurs team for the dead rubber. Dele Alli kept his place in a bid to regain his form after an indifferent start to the season but had another quiet night.
