ANDREW Coombs is vowing to continue working hard as he looks to keep hold of his starting position for Wales’ visit to Scotland in a fortnight.

The Newport Gwent Dragons lock has been a revelation in the Six Nations since winning his first cap in the defeat to Ireland earlier this month.

He was excellent in the 16-6 victory over France in Paris in the next game, and although he was good in the 26-9 win over Italy in Rome, it was probably the weakest performance of his three-cap career so far.

The 28-year-old seems to be his own harshest critic and wants to put things right as he comes under pressure from 2009 Lions star Alun Wyn Jones for his place.

“The one or two errors I made today are obviously getting to me a bit, but I will be working hard again in training this week to gain the trust of the coaches again to get that number four jersey, hopefully,” he said.

“I think I have done myself quite proud, I’ve played pretty well. I made one or two errors on the weekend, which I’m disappointed with, but that is part and parcel of the game.

“I will just have to go back into training this week and work hard on what went wrong.

“There were two handling errors, one in the first half and I got turned over on one carry as well, and I base my game around ball carrying and it wasn’t at its best, but like I said, hard work will put that right.”

Coombs added: “I’m probably the hardest person on myself, I’m my own worst critic and I do beat myself up when I make mistakes.

“I probably did some good on Saturday, but we will just have to see how the next two weeks go for us.”

Scotland will be a tough nut to crack in Coombs’ opinion, but victory would set up nicely England’s visit to Cardiff on the last weekend of the Six Nations.

“We’ve got a massive job to do in a fortnight’s time up in Scotland, it’s not going to be easy because they are a class side this season and if we can get the result up there it will be a massive occasion back in Cardiff on March 16,” he said.

“It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if England did come to us chasing a Grand Slam.

“They are a quality outfit and they have shown they are one of the best teams in the competition this campaign.

“I’m sure it will be a magnificent spectacle for everyone on the day.”
