WALES forward Jonathan Thomas has been forced to retire on medical advice.

The 32-year-old back row forward/lock spent last season playing with Worcester, helping the West Midlands side win promotion back to the Aviva Premiership by stunning Bristol in a thrilling play-off final.

However, he was diagnosed with mild epilepsy last year as a result of multiple head injuries and has been forced to hang up his boots.

He said: "I've done everything in my power to keep playing, however, there comes a point when you realise you need to listen to medical experts and also do what's best for your wellbeing."

Thomas won 67 caps, played in the 2003 and 2007 World Cups and featured in the 2005 and 2008 Grand Slam-winning teams.

"The highlight of my career was representing Wales," said the former Osprey. "To have played with so many great players, won two Grand Slams, played in two World Cups and gained 67 caps is something I used to dream about as a youngster."
