SAM Warburton believes a lack of discipline played a part in Wales’ last-gasp RBS 6 Nations loss to England in Cardiff.

Former captain Warburton and his Wales teammates conceded 10 penalties to the visitors’ six during Saturday’s 21-16 reverse at the Principality Stadium.

Owen Farrell converted a trio of three-pointers for Eddie Jones’ men, who won thanks to a late Elliot Daly try converted by Farrell.

“Obviously, we’re very disappointed,” said Warburton. “It was really good for 70 minutes, we just need to get better in the last 10. That was the message from the coaches and all the players agree.

“You’ve got to give England credit, they kept coming in the last 10 minutes and got that all-important try.”

Flanker Warburton received a blow to his shoulder in the closing stages but confirmed he would be fine to resume training on Tuesday.

He added: “I’m sure there were certain instances where perhaps we gave away penalties or a bit of possession which has ultimately given them territory.

“And that was one of our big targets going into the game, to try and keep the penalties down as much as we could.

“The message came on that we’d given away four penalties in a 12-minute period. They got a lot of territory from that in the first half and scored a try.

“Discipline was one of the main messages going into the game, and perhaps, on occasions, we gave away a few too many penalties.”

Warburton feels Wales have to learn from the defeat, in particular how to close out a match in the final 10 minutes.

“That last 10-minute period is the most important thing for us and managing to close out the game,” he said.

“We’ve done it in the past so we know we can do it, but it’s just looking at key moments in the game and our game management.”

Assessing the clash further, he continued: “It felt like an arm wrestle the whole way through.

“It was one of those games which if either team had lost that team would have been disappointed.

“We did have a lot of territory and possession in the second half, and if we could have converted that into a few more points it could be a slightly different situation.

“We’ve got three games now which all become must-wins because we want to win the championship.”
