A FORMER Premiership footballer came to Graig y Rhacca this week to see how the village football pitch has been transformed.
Former Wales international and Strictly Come Dancing Contestant, Robbie Savage was there to promote the work of Britvic and PepsiCo for 'Transform Your Patch'.
The drinks giant gave Graig y Rhacca FC £5,000 to put a fence around the pitch and paint it.
Groundwork Caerphilly also gave £1,000, Bedwas Trethomas and Machen Community Council gave £500 and the Communities First Council gave £700.
Manager of the football club, Rob Bailey said: "We have had terrible problems over the years with the pitch being cut up by mindless quad bikers, car drivers and other vehicles cutting the pitch.
"We had to get the pitch repaired on many occasions and had to play the games away so that the repairs could be made.
"About six months ago I was on the point of quitting because of the problems we were having but with this now we can hopefully build the football up again. We now only have one team where as we used to have four teams."
Graig y Rhacca Primary School, Groundwork Caerphilly and volunteers were on hand to paint the fence.
