Jayne Thorley is the owner of the well-known owner of Mrs T's cafe, which is situated in Beechwood Park.

1. How would you describe your business?

A family run independent cafe, in the heart of the local community, offering good quality food, cakes and beverages all made on the premises.

2. What made you decide to set your business up in Newport?

As a family, we have lived in the local area for over 30 years and my children grew up playing in Beechwood Park. It was my original intention to open a florist shop with a tea room but due to an arthritis diagnosis I couldn’t take it further, so when the opportunity came up to open Mrs T’s it was too good to miss.

3. What is the best bit about your business?

Our customers feedback makes it clear, it’s the friendly service and good quality food and cakes. These are the two things that are mentioned continually on Facebook and trip advisor. We work really hard to maintain theses standards too.

4. Do you think there are more independents coming to Newport that are thriving? If so, why

It is hard to succeed as a small business and there is very little real support available, so I’m not sure. Newport certainly has capacity for more independent traders and I would like to see it thrive.

5. What is it that makes your business stand out?

The cafe is a hub for the community and has become a meeting place for young and old in a really beautiful setting, something that you can’t get in a city centre.
