IEUAN Thomas’ inclusion in the Great Britain team for the European Championships has been confirmed.

Pontypool 3000m steeplechaser Thomas was one of 102 athletes named by British Athletics yesterday for next month’s event in Berlin.

Thomas’ ticket on the plane to Germany was all but sealed when, having already run the qualifying standard, he finished second at the British Championships in June.

British champion Zak Seddon and Jamaine Coleman join Thomas in the steeplechase, as Britain take their biggest ever team to a major championships in the modern era.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be selected for the European Championships," said Thomas.

"After the Commonwealth Games, the Europeans were always the goal and I can't wait to represent Great Britain once again.

"It's been a long season and I owe a lot to my coach James Thie for getting me in prime shape to compete at my very best in Berlin, and also to Adam Rattenberry who has literally kept me in one piece this year!"

Meanwhile, Laura Muir will only race in the 1500m at the European Championships as she hunts her first major outdoor title.

The 25-year-old has opted to withdraw from the 800m after suffering an inflamed Achilles at the Anniversary Games at the weekend.

Muir claimed bronze in the 3000m and silver in the 1500m at the World Indoor Championships in March having won gold in both at the European Indoors last year.

Performance director Neil Black said: “The standard of performances from British athletes since the Commonwealth Games in April has been extremely high and therefore competition for places to Berlin has been more competitive than ever.

“The team is our largest for over 100 years and we look forward to watching them thrive under the spotlight of a major championships.

“These European Championships are an important marker on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and we expect to be competing for medals at every turn.”

World number one Lorraine Ugen is included in the long jump with fellow European leaders Zharnel Hughes (100m) and Dina Asher-Smith (100m and 200m) tipped to win gold.

Anyika Onuora and Eilidh Doyle will make history as they prepare for a record-equalling fifth appearance for the British team at a European Championships.
