NEWPORT city centre is to host a month-long German Christmas Market, it was announced today.

A first for Newport, the market will be staged from November 19 to December 22.

The market, arrranged by Newport Now Business Improvement District, will feature 29 chalet-style stalls and will be in Commercial Street, from Westgate Square to its junction with Hill Street.

Stalls will be selling a variety of traditional Christmas food, drink and gifts.

Full details of the stalls will be revealed by Newport Now over the next few weeks.

The market is being delivered by delivered by International Street Markets.

Newport Now manager Kevin Ward said: “We are delighted to be able to announce Newport’s first German Christmas Market.

“We know these events are hugely popular in other towns and cities across the UK and Europe, attracting visitors from far and wide, and we’re confident having the market in place for the crucial month before Christmas will increase footfall and trade for the traditional city centre.

“The initial idea for the event came from a BID member who is an independent trader in Commercial Street, and we think the market will be beneficial for the city centre as a whole.

“We’ve worked closely with International Street Markets over a number of months to ensure the market stalls will complement rather than compete with other businesses in the city centre.

“International Street Markets are hugely experienced at delivering this kind of market and we hope it will become an annual fixture in Newport.”
