M4 around Newport re-opens following police incident

A man standing on the wrong side of a bridge caused the closure of the M4 last night.

The M4 around Newport has reopened in both directions following tonight's police incident.

Gwent Police say some delays are expected due to the build-up of traffic either side of the closure - from junction24 (Coldra) to 28 (Tredegar Park).

 The motorway has now been closed for two hours and the incident near junction 25-25A is ongoing.

Traffic continues to be diverted westbound off junction 24 (Coldra) and eastbound off junction 28 (Tredegar Park) - see above (Image - Traffic Wales).

Caerleon Road is also closed on either side of the motorway bridge at junction 25.

The M4 remains closed in both directions on a seven-mile stretch between junctions 24 and 28.

The A48 Southern Distributor Road - a key diversion route - is busy, particularly eastbound from the M4's junction 28 (Tredegar Park), and westbound from Newport Retail Park to the bridge across the Usk.

Newport Bus services are affected by the motorway closure, with all Caerleon Road services diverted via St Julians Avenue.

*UPDATE: 7.55PM*

The incident at the bridge near junction 25A is still being dealt with, and traffic is being diverted off the M4 from junctions 24 (westbound) and 28 (eastbound).

Westbound traffic is queuing for more than two miles approaching the Coldra junction, and a similar queue is on the eastbound stretch approaching junction 26 (Malpas).

THE M4 has been closed in both directions in Newport - between junctions 24 (Coldra) and 28 (Tredegar Park), because of what is being described as a "police incident".

The incident is understood to be near junction 25A (A4042/Newport), and the length of the closure is to aid with the setting up of diversions.

Traffic trapped within the closure is being taken off the motorway at the nearest exit.
