A POPULAR comic book store in Newport city centre opened for business over the weekend after moving to new premises.

Sin City Comics is now next to WH Smith on Commercial Street.

The launch on Saturday coincided with Free Comic Book Day.

Store owner Shane Jordan told the Argus last month that the business had grown so much it needed to move into bigger premises.

Sin City attracts people from across the region with its range of comics, board games,role-playing and card games offered at its gaming area. Gamers can also bring along their own games.

Laura Austen, Shane’s partner, said: "Comics are and will remain the heart of the business, but we now cater to a vast demographic.

“For example, we stock official Harry Potter jewellery – the charm bracelets are proving to be very popular.

“We also have the usual DC and Marvel items as well as a large range of gift ideas that range from Disney to anime.”

The couple were also raising money for Bliss a charity for babies born premature or sick after their son Parker Jordan was born prematurely over Christmas at the city’s Royal Gwent Hospital.

They have also organised GeekedFest Newport Comic Con for May 18-19 at the Newport Centre with celebrity guests due to appear from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Doctor Who and many more including comic book artists and events like costume play and virtual reality gaming.

Speaking about Free Comic Book Day, Miss Austen said: “Staff sometimes have to convince you the comics are free.”

This year more than 50 titles were created especially for the event and each customer could have three each – no purchase necessary.

The business raised money for the Special Care Baby Unit (Neonatal) at the Royal Gwent Hospital.
