GWENT’S men lifted the Welsh Inter-Counties darts title at Pontins Prestatyn for only the third time in the event’s history.

The county’s top darts players beat arch-rivals Glamorgan (10-5), defending champions Gwynedd (8-7), Breconshire (10-5), Montgomery & Radnorshire (10-5) and Pembrokeshire (11-4) to put them within one more win of victory.

A nail-biting final match against Clwyd went down to the last leg, but Brynmawr’s Gethyn Bennett, in only his seventh game for the county, held his nerve to hit the winning double and seal an 8-7 triumph.

Team manager Morgan Barrell said: “All 18 players that played were outstanding. They all played with so much heart and passion to achieve the goal of winning the Welsh Inter-Counties title.

“I’m incredibly proud of each one of the team and still buzzing with pride, and to win this prestigious crown in only my first year as team manager is an incredible achievement.”

Two Gwent players, Stephen Cake (Hafodyrynys) and Mark Blandford (Pontnewydd), finished with 100% records.

After celebrating long into the night, the team will now turn their attention to achieving another successful season, starting with the visit of Gwynedd to Hafodyrynys RFC in September.
