MORE people visited Blackwood town centre, compared with this time last year with figures revealing a six percent increase.

Cllr Ron Davies, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning said: “I am so pleased to see that the people of Blackwood and the surrounding area are really supporting their town centre at a time when retailers are facing challenging economic times”.

He continued: “A six percent increase in visitors to the town centre compared to this time last year really is a substantial rise – the blend of international names and fantastic independent retailers on offer make Blackwood town centre a great shopping experience, with something to suit all tastes.”

It’s also been a busy time over the past couple of months in Blackwood, with the town having a packed events calendar. Events including the recent Blackwood Carnival, Blackwood Summer Festival and Go Wild! In Pontllanfraith, have each attracted thousands of people to the town to come along and join in the fun.

This Saturday also saw thousands of people flock to the Bedwellty Agricultural Show for the annual extravaganza of livestock, horse exhibits, trade stands and craft displays.

Other recent good news for Blackwood is the opening of a brand new fashion store called Carnaby Street on Blackwood High Street. The shop sells clothing and accessories inspired by the Mod movement and adds an authentic ‘retro’ look to the High Street.

The town centre’s pedestrian flow is counted electronically using the Footfall electronic counting system, situation outside Boots on Blackwood High Street. This increase in footfall compared to this time last year is also consistent with other town centres across Caerphilly county borough.
