EXPERIENCED back Geraint Walsh is relishing a first taste of Gwent derby action when Pontypool entertain Newbridge in the WRU National Championship this afternoon.

The 30-year-old headed for Pooler this summer after winning a glut of medals with Pontypridd, with his exploits at Sardis Road also earning a chance as a professional with Cardiff Blues.

The versatile Wales 7s international, who is primarily a full-back, has settled in Gwent as his new side attempt to win a hat-trick of titles that will earn a promotion play-off.

But after beating Ystrad Rhondda, Tata Steel and Beddau, Walsh knows that Pooler must up their game against The Pigs.

"Everyone picks their game up when you take on a local rival. I haven't been at Pontypool for long, but I understand what a derby victory would mean to the squad and the fans," said Walsh.

"The Beddau game was the first time this season that Pooler fans have had a glimpse of what we're capable of.

"After the Tata game, we needed a jolt and we responded. We're still waiting for things to fully click, but we'll keep working and target an even better performance at home to Newbridge."

'Bridge started the season with a triumph against Rhydyfelin but have since slipped to losses against Narberth and Bedlinog.

Nonetheless, the Welfare Ground side enjoyed a strong 2017/18 campaign when finishing fifth and will test Pooler's 28-game winning streak if they are on their game.

Last season Pontypool triumphed 26-3 on home soil in December and made it a double in March when they won 59-14 in a fiery derby. Newbridge full-back Lewis Hudd was sent off for a headbutt after just 11 minutes with Leighton Jones' side running in nine tries.
