WALES speedster Hallam Amos is targeting a return to action in the Dragons' European Challenge Cup clash with Northampton.

The 24-year-old wing/full-back has been out of action since suffering a dislocated right elbow in the region's Guinness PRO14 loss at Leinster.

Amos was given oxygen at the Royal Dublin Society after the blow, which happened when he collided with teammate Brandon Nansen while attempting to make a tackle.

Initial fears of it being a serious injury were allayed and the influential back is making good progress to eye the crunch clash with the Saints on Friday, October 19 or if that is too soon the PRO14 trip to Ulster the following weekend.

"It's going well and the rehab is going as well as it could have," said medical student Amos, who was making his 100th Dragons appearance at the RDS.

"It was a pretty traumatic injury with Brandon coming through the back of it, but no operation was needed and the target was always four to six weeks.

"I'm now looking at the Northampton or Ulster home games, depending on how the next few weeks of rehab go. I'm back to full range and it's now about strengthening.

"It's frustrating, but it is part and parcel of the game and I have stayed positive, and it means I can do some more study, so it's not all bad!

"Jordan (Williams) at 15 has been on fire so you have always got to work to get your place back, but hopefully it shouldn't be too long a layoff for me and I'll be back soon."

Amos started all three summer Tests at full-back in the absence of rested Lions Leigh Halfpenny and Liam Williams to take his number of caps to 18.

Warren Gatland names his autumn squad in a fortnight – the week of the Northampton game – and the Dragons flyer hopes that his lack of game time will not count against him in the fierce battle for back three spots in World Cup year.

"The autumn internationals are on the horizon and it something I have spoken to the coaches and physios about and I'm aiming for that," said Amos, who played in all four autumn Tests in 2017 but did not feature in the Six Nations after falling down the pecking order because of a December ankle injury.

"I don't think I will be back when the squad is named so it is whether I can get back playing and force my way into the thinking.

"It's an exciting season, especially with what is coming at the end of it.

"Every player in Wales is looking at that and the more you play this season, and hopefully the better you play, the more chance you've got of sneaking into that."

Halfpenny, Williams and George North have all made strong starts to the season at the Scarlets, Saracens and the Ospreys respectively.

Scarlets speedster Steff Evans enjoyed a breakthrough season in Test rugby last year, playing eight times, but started this campaign in his region's A team in the Celtic Cup.

Josh Adams earned four caps in 2018 thanks to his exploits in the English Premiership with Worcester, finishing as the league's top try scorer with 13.

He scored his first Wales try with a fine sole effort in the second Test win against Argentina but has yet to cross in five Warriors games this season.
