EBBW Vale boss Greg Woods believes South African centre Carl Meyer is only just starting to hit his straps as the former Dragon attempts to earn a return to professional rugby.

The 27-year-old will be a key figure as the Steelmen attempt to make it six Premiership wins out of six against Swansea tomorrow.

Meyer was pivotal in Ebbw's stirring second-half comeback against Neath at the Gnoll last weekend, setting up a pair of tries with power breaks and booming over a penalty to help turn a 17-0 half-time deficit into a 25-17 triumph.

The South African utility back was released by the Dragons last season after making 64 appearances and had been linked with Cardiff Blues, whose backs coach Jason Strange worked with Meyer in his first spell at Eugene Cross Park.

Ebbw head coach Woods believes his centre, who suffered an injury-hit 2017/18, is getting back to the sort of form that will catch the eye of pro clubs.

"Carl created two tries and we needed that spark," he said. "Someone of that quality can produce those moments and after not playing a lot of rugby this year he is getting his match eyes and mojo back.

"He is playing his way back into form after a long layoff and there is still more to come. I have told him that I want him to be better again this weekend.

"He has a big boot and is strong in defence but Neath was the first time we have really seen that attack.

"It's a situation that suits both of us because Carl has to play his way back into professional rugby and helping us be at the top of the table would make it easier to achieve that."

Woods said before the trip to the Gnoll that Ebbw were yet to produce a complete performance and the statement still applies.

"It's beyond a joke now! We have got to play for the full 80 minutes and start better," said Woods.

"We were so poor in the first half and then so good in the second that in the end it was a comfortable win.

"The video has been brutal because there was some really good stuff but some really bad stuff. At least it is nice to be fixing the problems after wins and we know that we have to keep improving.

"Swansea head here after two good wins, and beat Cross Keys with a bonus last week, so we are confident but not complacent."
