NEWPORT County AFC goal ace Jamille Matt can’t wait to pit his wits against a Premier League big gun today – and he firmly believes that Leicester City are there for the taking.

Matt, who has struck 13 times for the Exiles so far this season, would love to add to his tally against Claude Puel’s visitors and help the hosts deliver another FA Cup shock at Rodney Parade.

The third-round tie is the biggest match in the competition that the 29-year-old striker has played in, and one that will be broadcast live to the nation.

“The lads have been concentrating on the league the last couple of weeks but as soon as the game finished on Tuesday, we turned our attention to this,” he said.

“Everyone’s buzzing and rather than being daunting it’s something to look forward to.

“It’s something to go into with a bit of confidence where you can pit your wits against players from the top league in our country.

“We’ll be looking to challenge ourselves and see what we can do.

“Part of the FA Cup is a League Two club being able to face a Premier League team.

“It’s where every player growing up wants to be, at the top level of the game.

“I’ve not managed to make it there so to pit your wits against a Premier League team is the next big thing.”

He added: “If we turn up thinking we’ve lost then we probably have lost.

“Tottenham are a team that is obviously challenging for the Premier League and Newport almost beat them.

“So why can’t we do the same again and beat Leicester?”

When asked if the visit of the former Premier League champions had led to the County players taking their eye off the ball in League Two, Matt said: “It has definitely not been a distraction.

“I’ve been looking at the league games.

“You can’t look too far forward because it will come back to bite you.

“We’re not on the best run of form but we’re a team capable of beating anyone on our day.

“The fans have been brilliant his season and we’ll be drawing on them again to try and help us on Sunday.”
