AMERICAN Omar Douglas has absolutely no intention of coming off second best to Lee Selby when the two clash at London’s O2 later this month.

Douglas, who turns 28 tomorrow, says he thrives as the away fighter and will not be coming to the UK to “make up the numbers”.

He has his own dreams of securing a world title shot in what is going to be the biggest fight of Delaware-born Douglas’ career to date.

For St Joseph’s ace Selby, meanwhile, the February 23 bout will be a first after moving up to lightweight following the loss of his IBF world featherweight crown to Josh Warrington.

The 31-year-old from Barry wants to do what no other Welsh boxer has done before and become a two-time and two-weight world champion.

But Douglas plans to derail Selby’s bid for history and continue in his own quest for global honours.

“This is a huge, life-changing opportunity for me and I’d be a fool not to take what is put in front of me on a plate,” he said.

“I’m not the B-side or coming into the fight to make up the numbers, I’m coming to London with my own agenda.

“I’ve got my own plans and ambitions of becoming a world champion and I’m not changing that for nobody.”

He added: “I love the challenge, I rise to it. Fighting away from home, in another country, in front of Selby’s fans, this is what I dream of, upsetting the odds and winning.

“Selby hasn’t fought anyone like me before. Sure, he’s a decent boxer and he’s resilient, but I bring more to the table.

“He’s a former world champion and I respect that, but I will be coming out of that ring the winner. I know that beating him will open big doors for me.

“I know that Selby’s got his plans and what he wants to do, but I want to be fighting for a world title this year and any champions at 130 or 135 pounds, I’m after them.”

The stakes are certainly high with the sparkle and riches of potential mega-fights against the likes of top pound-for-pounders Vasyl Lomachenko and Mikey Garcia in Selby’s sights, so a slip-up against Douglas could have devastating consequences.

The big-hitting American poses a massive threat to the Welshman and brings with him an impressive record of 19 wins from 21.

The Selby-Douglas bout is one of the support acts to the Premier Boxing Champions and Poxon Sports-promoted show’s main event between James DeGale and Chris Eubank Jr.

Commonwealth heavyweight king Joe Joyce also features in a clash with ex-world champion Bermane Stiverne, while there is a British light-heavyweight title eliminator involving Andre Sterling and Ricky Summers.
