CARETAKER boss Ceri Jones says the Dragons need to show resilience for the full 80 minutes if they are to end their Guinness PRO14 away losing streak at Benetton next Saturday.

The Rodney Parade region had a chance of triumphing for the first time on the road since March, 2015 when they were level-pegging with Edinburgh after an hour at Murrayfield last night.

A first half brace by centre Tyler Morgan and seven points from the boot of fly-half Josh Lewis had earned a 17-14 half-time lead in the Scottish capital, and the play-off hopefuls had been limited to a penalty leveller as the game passed the hour.

However, Edinburgh’s power game eventually told and the Dragons shipped three tries in the final quarter to leave Murrayfield with nothing to show for their toil after a 34-17 loss.

“It was a good performance for 60 minutes but unfortunately it wasn’t an 80-minute performance, which was our downfall,” said interim head coach Jones.

“We will look to take the positives from it but we lacked a little bit of control just after half-time when we overplayed a bit, which cost us in the long run.

“We had a couple of set piece decisions that went against us, they turned on their power game and we didn’t handle it well enough.

“They are a very good team at home but we put ourselves under pressure to a certain extent with that period after half-time when earlier we had been putting the ball in Edinburgh’s half, chased well and put them under pressure. We hurt ourselves.”

The Dragons don’t have long to lick their wounds with a trip to Treviso – the scene of their last away win four years ago – to face Benetton on Saturday.

The Italians are also chasing a spot in the play-offs and took the spoils when the teams met in Newport on the opening day of the season thanks to their strong pack.

“Quite simply we’ve got to turn a 60-minute performance into an 80-minute performance and stick to the gameplan all the way through,” said Jones.

“It was frustrating that when Edinburgh scored one try they went straight on to score another, so we need to show a bit more resilience than that.

“It will be a tough, abrasive game because Benetton are a good side with a strong home record. We expect a similar game to Edinburgh because they have a good set piece, powerful pack and we need to combat that.”

If the Dragons stand firm to the Italians’ pack then they will hope that Wales centre Morgan can thrive with ball in hand after a strong showing at Murrayfield.

“Tyler was really sharp. He looked electric for both his scores and looks back to his best,” said Jones.

“He is one of our players with x-factor in the back line, he showed parts of that in Edinburgh.”

The Dragons are unlikely to have loosehead Ryan Bevington (concussion) back for the Benetton game.
