JASON Tovey’s third spell at the Dragons has come to an end after the region’s record points scorer was not offered a new contract.

The 30-year-old from Risca returned to Rodney Parade this season, initially on permit from Cross Keys before his move was made permanent in January.

However, he has been confirmed on the Dragons’ list of leavers along with South African centre Jarryd Sage.

The list doesn’t include stalwarts Brok Harris and Nic Cudd, whose contracts expire this summer but who could sign new deals.

Tovey made 15 appearances, passed 1,000 points for the Dragons and coolly slotted match-winning kicks in the derby wins against the Ospreys and Scarlets.

However, his efforts were not enough to get offered a fresh deal with the region instead chasing Ospreys playmaker Sam Davies.

If they do not succeed in their pursuit of the Wales international then they will look to bring in another experienced game manager to go with the other 10s under contract, Josh Lewis, Arwel Robson and Jacob Botica.

That means, unless he returns for a fourth spell, Tovey’s final touch with the Dragons will be the conversion that defeated the Scarlets at Judgement Day.

Sage, who qualifies for Wales through his father from Newbridge, spent two campaigns at Rodney Parade.

The 23-year-old was signed from the Southern Kings last season and, after a sticky start to life in Newport, looked to be settling at the start of 2018/19.

However, after featuring in 14 of the first 20 fixtures the centre made just three more appearances and has not earned a contract extension.

Adam Warren, Jack Dixon and Tyler Morgan will be the frontline midfield options for next season, backed up by Connor Edwards, Tiaan Loots and Wales Under-20s prospect Aneurin Owen.

Veteran former internationals Gavin Henson and Zane Kirchner did not get offered fresh deals with the Dragons looking to make room in the budget.

Playmaker Henson, 37, made just three appearances this season with his sole start against Benetton on opening weekend.

Utility back Kirchner, 34, made 27 outings after signing from Leinster in 2017 and started last week’s Judgement Day win against the Scarlets on the wing.

Prop Dan Suter leaves after just 10 appearances, the 25-year-old tighthead having been hit by suffering a pre-season injury just weeks after arriving from the Ospreys in the summer of 2017.

Gerard Ellis, who was converted from hooker to loosehead, was released earlier this season to join Coventry while scrum-half Rhodri Davies will also play in the English Championship after earning a move to Cornish Pirates.

George Gasson, a 22-year-old winger from Caerphilly who has spent this season with Wales on the HSBC Sevens World Series, will leave after making four appearances in 2017/18.

Wales wing Hallam Amos’ move to Cardiff Blues was confirmed in March while centre/wing Calvin Wellington and back row forward James Thomas left during the season.

Head coach Ceri Jones said: “We thank all the players for their hard work and professionalism during their time at Dragons. They leave with our best wishes and we wish them well in their future endeavours.”
