WALES Sevens international Owen Jenkins is in the mix to make his Dragons debut in the Guinness PRO14 opener at Munster after wing Jared Rosser was ruled out of the start of the season.

Jenkins joined the Rodney Parade region on a short-term deal for the Celtic Cup campaign to build up fitness ahead of the World Rugby Sevens Series, which starts in December.

However, the 26-year-old, the son of former Wales and Pontypool hooker Garin, has made an impression on director of rugby Dean Ryan and was promoted to the senior XV against the Scarlets last weekend.

Jenkins scored two tries and, in the absence of Rosser, who is yet to feature this summer after suffering a leg injury in training, could feature at Thomond Park a week on Saturday.

South Wales Argus:

"Owen is a genuine option for Munster," said Ryan about the WRU-contracted speedster. "He has trained fantastically well to adapt from sevens, has challenged himself to learn and was great against the Scarlets.

"He gets lots of things right and is a real threat, so that is credit to him. I had a conversation with Owen where I said he is in the mix for Munster, which if you'd asked him three months ago he wouldn't have thought that would happen so quickly."

Jenkins played for Wales at last year's Commonwealth Games and the World Cup, while he was his country's leading try scorer in the World Rugby series with 16 in 48 matches.

He made eight appearances for Cardiff Blues before focusing on sevens, with it being a big year in the shortened format ahead of next year's Olympics in Tokyo.

South Wales Argus:

The Dragons have fit-again Ashton Hewitt, Will Talbot-Davies and Dafydd Howells as their other options for the PRO14 opener in Limerick.

They are, however, braced to be without Samoa lock Brandon Nansen after he was forced off in the opening stages of the win against the Scarlets.

The 25-year-old went off with his right arm in a makeshift sling – it was his left forearm that he broke with Stade Francais before moving to Rodney Parade – and the full extent of the blow should become clear in the coming days.

The Dragons XV take on Ulster A in the Celtic Cup at their Ystrad Mynach training base on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

The team is announced at midday tomorrow and Ryan is set to include a handful of his senior squad, but those that are pencilled in for Munster will not be included.

The fly-half selection should indicate who is in pole position to be Sam Davies' back-up at Thomond Park.

Josh Lewis is yet to feature in pre-season because of a niggle, Arwel Robson returned in the Celtic Cup after nine months out with a torn hamstring last week while Jacob Botica, yet to make his professional debut after moving south from RGC last season, was an unused replacement against the Scarlets.
