NEWPORT moved up into fourth place in the Indigo group Premiership with a comprehensive 22-0 home win over Bridgend that included four tries.

The Black and Ambers raced into a 10-point lead in as many minutes as they plundered their first two tries.

A wide attack instigated by wing Elliot Frewen was rounded off by full back David Richards for the first and then a driving maul paved the way for wing Jon Morris to pounce on a chip kick to score the second.

The home pack were in combative mood and outside half Matt O’Brien kicked effectively for position. Bridgend gave away too many penalties and lost prop Cai Lewis to the sin-bin.

Newport took full advantage of their extra man, setting up a series of line-out drives. They earned a penalty and, having taken it quickly, saw outstanding flanker Josh Skinner cross from close range for try number three.

O’Brien added the extras to make it 17-0 at the break and leave the second half all about chasing the bonus-point try.

Bridgend enjoyed periods of possession, and applied a squeeze in the scrums, but rarely advanced beyond their opponents’ 22.

If there was one problem for the home side it was at the scrum and head coach Ty Morris made changes off the bench to try to improve the situation.

The visitors owned much of the third quarter, but as they huffed and puffed they could not blow the Newport house down.

The home defenders battled for crucial turnovers and harried their opponents into making costly errors.

The Bridgend effort was delivered a crucial blow when No8 Iestyn Merriman saw a straight red for illegal use of the elbow.

Newport once again used their extra man to good advantage and concerted pressure allowed them to launch a wide offensive for replacement back Llywarch ap Myrddin to snipe over in the corner.

It was job done for the home team, despite having hooker Matt Dwyer yellow carded.
