CLUB legend Brian 'BJ' Jones has been elected as president of Newport RFC.

The Black and Ambers icon has been involved with the club since 1953 as player, captain, coach, committee man and chairman.

Jones made 330 appearances for Newport and was a member of the Newport sides that beat Australia in 1957 and New Zealand in 1963 for the centre to complete a personal southern hemisphere hat-trick after beating South Africa with the Barbarians in 1960.

The 74-year-old from Cwmcarn – affectionately known as Mr Newport – is a firm fixture around the club.

"Brian is still enthusiastically involved with the club on a daily basis and is a big part of the management team of the club," read a Newport statement.

"He and wife Jacqueline rarely miss a training session, let alone a game.

"(Chairman) Will Godfrey spoke warmly about BJ's involvement throughout his long association with the club and the recommendation of the president position was endorsed unanimously by those present."

Jones' fellow Newport legend Dai Watkins was appointed as an honorary life member to recognise his commitment on and off the field since 1961.

"Newport RFC are indebted to both of these role models for their huge commitment to the Black and Ambers over the years and look forward to their association continuing for many years to come," read the statement.

Meanwhile, the Black and Ambers celebrated the golden anniversary of the 1969 win against the Springboks and their Anglo-Welsh championship triumph at a special dinner at Rougemont School.

The event was organised by the Friends of Newport Rugby Trust and was attended by former players, supporters and guests.

Hall of famer Keith James was master of ceremonies and there were speeches from Brian Jones, Paul Watts, Jeff Watkins and South Africa vice-captain Tommy Bedford.
