JOE Franchi has been backed to lead from the front by Ebbw Vale boss Greg Woods after the combative hooker was chosen as new club captain.
The 26-year-old will take over from lock Ashley Sweet, who is leaving for a fresh challenge next season.
The Steelmen have had talismanic leaders in recent years, with Damien Hudd, Ronny Kynes and then Sweet having the honour of the captaincy, and head coach Woods believes they have another forward who sets the tone.
“Joe has all the qualities of a good leader and he leads from the front on and off the field. He is undoubtedly the right person to lead us through the next period at Ebbw Vale,” said Woods.
Franchi, who was a member of the 2016 title winning side, is thrilled to have been chosen.
“I feel extremely privileged to be entrusted with this duty, especially as I will be following in the footsteps of so many club legends,” said the front-rower, whose twin Dom is also a Steelman.
