EBBW Vale were left to dream of what might have been as they missed out on a trip to the Principality Stadium after being hit for six by double chasing Llandovery.

It had been 1-1 in the Indigo Premiership in matches coming into the WRU Premiership Cup semi-final at Aberavon's Talbot Athletic Ground, but this was an emphatic victory for the defending Premiership champions as they reached their third Cup final with a six try, 43-7 triumph.

A brace of outstanding tries from former Wales U20 full-back Jac Davies, one in each half, inspired a clinical and simply dominant Drovers display, in a game they were all but out of sight in by half-time.

Outside half Ioan Hughes, centre Adam Warren and prop Jamie Hughes also dotted down before the break with Davies and number eight Joe Powell running in second half scores to seal the deal.

Reece Dunn’s second half try was scant consolation for the Steelmen and their long wait for a first cup final appearance since 1998 goes on. Ioan Hughes got the scoreboard ticking with a third minute penalty with the Drovers over for their first try of the match two minutes later, scored by Davies who ran in from halfway.

The conversion attempt was missed by Hughes but, moments later, he was over for Llandovery’s second try following a good team move which this time he did convert to make it 15-0.

That was shortly followed by try number three scored by outside centre Warren, who collected Lee Rees’ cross kick, and the game was only 27 minutes old when Jamie Hughes scored Llandovery’s fourth try, with the Steelmen stunned.

Ioan Hughes improved both to make it 29-0 at the turnaround.

Ebbw needed a miraculous second half performance, but there would be no divine intervention.

Another moment of individual brilliance from Davies put the result beyond doubt, in a move from one end of the field to the other, that he started close to his own try line and finished running in from halfway. Ioan Hughes converted.

Dunn responded for Ebbw but the final word went to Llandovery’s Powell who ran in try number six.

Now Jason Strange will have to get his players to rise to the challenge of potentially meeting the Drovers again in the Premiership play-offs.

The Steelmen currently sit in third place with five games to play. They still need 10 points to guarantee a top four finish and the sprint to the line will continue on 21 March when they welcome second placed Newport to Eugene Cross Park.
