CAERPHILLY Cycling Club is celebrating after achieving Go-Ride Clubmark accreditation following the work of the volunteers and members in the Kids’ Club section.

Clubmark is cross-sport quality accreditation for clubs with youth and junior sections, which proves they are observing best practice in child protection, coaching and competition, equity and club management.

The Go-Ride programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and provides a platform to improve bike handling skills. More than 60 per cent of the Great Britain cycling team started at a Go-Ride club and it provides a first step on to the Performance Pathway.

The Clubmark accreditation was presented by Anne Adams-King, chief executive officer of Welsh Cycling, at the Welsh Cycling Awards in Cardiff.

Caerphilly Cycling Club provides inclusive cycling opportunities across all coaching sessions for both youth and adult members and provides a supportive environment for any person taking part.

Go-Ride sessions run regularly at Hendre Junior School on Sunday afternoons as part of regular coaching blocks throughout the year.

The evening was a double celebration as club member Chris Corbett later received his award for club cyclist of year.

Club chairman Steve Jenkins was thrilled to see the relatively young club achieve this award in such a short space of time since forming and setting up the Go-Ride section in the form of Kids’ Club.

“We're delighted to achieve the Go-Ride Clubmark accreditation in what is only the second of two very busy seasons for the club,” said Jenkins.

“Giving us a strong junior section was something the club had set out to do from day one and receiving this accreditation is testament to the hard work of our coaches and other volunteers.

“We look forward to growing again in our third season and giving more young riders the opportunity to learn new skills, have fun and make new friends.”

Caerphilly Cycling Club currently has more than 130 members, half of which are under 18.

The club’s Go-Ride sessions are delivered throughout the year at traffic-free facilities, thereby offering a safe environment for young people to try cycling.
