VETERAN gloveman James Bittner has joined Championship side Reading after deciding not to extend his stay at Rodney Parade as Newport County AFC’s goalkeeping coach.

The hugely experienced Bittner will take up the same role with Reading U23s under Madejski Stadium academy manager Ged Roddy.

Exiles boss Michael Flynn had hoped to keep Bittner as a member of his coaching staff after the 36-year-old's playing contract was not renewed in May.

However, the former Exeter City, Forest Green Rovers and Hereford United keeper, who was limited to only a handful of appearances in two seasons in South Wales, opted for pastures new.

As well as coaching and playing for County, Bittner also took temporary charge of the side for two matches alongside former first-team coach Sean McCarthy.

The duo oversaw a defeat to Swansea City U23s in the Checkatrade Trophy and scoreless draw with Colchester United in League Two while the Exiles were between managers in October 2016.

A County statement read: “James Bittner has been a brilliant servant for the club over the last two years, from taking on the role of caretaker manager for two matches (between former managers Warren Feeney and Graham Westley) to helping the team achieve the Great Escape and a fantastic Emirates FA Cup run.

“Everyone at Newport County AFC would like to thank James for his efforts over the last few years and wish him the very best with his future endeavours.”
