IT’S second against 24th at Rodney Parade tomorrow night but Michael Flynn won’t let his Newport County AFC side underestimate Macclesfield Town.

Saturday’s stirring fightback from 2-0 down to beat Cambridge United 4-2 means County have matched their best ever start to a Football League campaign.

Seven wins and a draw from the first 10 games is equal to the class of 1951 and Flynn’s men have shown they are capable of making more history this season.

Winless Macclesfield are setting the wrong sorts of records with three draws and seven defeats so far but the Exiles boss is adamant that they will be tricky opponents.

“There’s no easy game in this league, believe me,” said Flynn.

“They’re going to be hungry and they’ll be hurting. They’ll want to end their winless run and get off the mark.

“I know Mark Yates. He’s a proud man and he’ll have them up for it, don’t you worry about that.”

County should be full of confidence after they recovered from a dreadful start to beat Cambridge thanks to a penalty from Mickey Demetriou, a first goal since August 14 for Padraig Amond and a two headers from substitute Jamille Matt.

“You can’t give teams a head start like we did but I’m going to concentrate on the positives,” said Flynn.

“The character that the boys showed and the desire to keep the ball out at one end and put it in at the other end was exceptional.”

Top scorer Matt, who also netted twice against Chelsea under-21s last week, is now on six goals for the season and will hope to claim a starting spot tomorrow.

“We made a big decision to put Jamille on and it changed the game but there’s no egos here,” said Flynn. “Everybody knows that they’re going to get their chance.

“He’ll be the first to tell you that he hasn’t had the most fluent training or run of games. He’s had little niggles here and there and he hasn’t trained all the time.

“He’s getting there. At Tranmere he came on and looked absolutely shattered but on Tuesday he lasted 80-odd minutes before he hurt his ankle.

“He’s getting those minutes in his legs now and that hour won’t do him any harm.”

Mark O’Brien injured his hamstring in the opening minutes on Saturday and is almost certain to miss out tomorrow.

“I’ve never seen a hamstring done that quickly in all my career,” said Flynn.

“It doesn’t look good at the moment but it’s too early to tell and I’m not going to put a timescale on it.”

Midfielders Andrew Crofts (Achilles) and Matty Dolan (knee) are also doubtful but goalkeeper Joe Day could return after missing the Cambridge game due to personal reasons.

Nick Townsend made his League debut for County, who named only six substitutes and had no gloveman on the bench.

“There’s not a goalkeeper in the academy, which needs looking at, so we couldn’t call one up,” explained the manager.

“If the worst had come to the worst it would have been Scot Bennett going in.

“Hopefully everything is OK with Joe and he’s ready to go but the most important thing is that things are OK there.

“That win was for him. He’s saved us enough times and won us enough points so we got those three points for Joe and his family.”
