TOP scorer Jamille Matt is determined to keep his hot streak going tonight as Newport County AFC host League Two’s bottom club Macclesfield Town at Rodney Parade.

Matt came off the bench to bag a brace in Saturday’s thrilling 4-2 win over Cambridge United.

And that game-changing performance followed another goal double in last week’s Checkatrade Trophy win over Chelsea under-21s.

The summer signing from Blackpool now has six goals in 13 appearances, despite being hampered by an ankle injury for most of his time with the Exiles.

Matt insists he is now fit and ready to start against Macclesfield tonight but he’s not taking a starting spot or a County victory for granted.

“I was a little bit frustrated [not to start on Saturday],” he said. “But I was always going to be ready either way.

“I’m happy I came on and made a difference in the game but everyone played their part.

“It’s a team game and we stuck together and did well.

“Mickey [Demetriou] did very well to tuck away his penalty and Padraig [Amond, who also scored] worked his socks off, and probably hasn’t got the goals he’s deserved in the last couple of weeks.

“Our team spirit was the key thing and all the lads on the bench were ready if called upon.”

Matt was also quick to thank Dan Butler, who delivered the crosses for both his headers and the goal for Amond.

“I definitely owe Dan,” he added. “It always helps when you’ve got that kind of delivery in your team, he managed to finish with three assists, which is amazing.

“I thrive off deliveries into the box and when you’ve got these players you can just get in the box knowing they’re going to put it in there.”

Matt only managed four goals in 36 appearances while on loan at Grimsby Town last season but he says this County team is a much better fit for him.

“I didn’t think the team I was in last year played to my strengths, this season is different so hopefully I can add to my six goals now,” said the Jamaican-born forward.

“I’ve set a target for double figures, that’s my target and if I get there then I can reassess.”

Saturday’s win lifted County to second in the League Two table but Matt says they must not underestimate basement boys Macclesfield.

“It feels good to be second but we can’t take anything for granted,” said the 28-year-old.

“We know we have good players and hopefully we can kick on.

“We’ll be looking to put on another good performance and get another three points.

“I don’t tend to look at the league table,” he added. “We need to show respect to everyone whether they’re at the top or bottom.

“I know some of the Macclesfield players and I know how good they are so we’ve got to be prepared.”
