MICHAEL Flynn hopes that Newport County AFC will be able to maintain their impressive form and finish the season just like they have started it.

The Exiles boss has seen his side record the club’s best ever start to a Football League campaign after 13 games.

They sit third in League Two with an impressive total of 27 points, three more than at the same stage of last term.

County, level on points with second-placed Exeter City, travel to Crawley Town tomorrow (kick-off 3pm) on a run of six matches unbeaten in all competitions.

Flynn’s men also enjoyed a great start to last season but were unable to keep it going and missed out on a place in the play-offs by 11 points.

Speaking about the campaign so far, Flynn said: “We’ve made massive progress.

“It’s the best start the club has had for as long as I can remember, I think since the 1930s.

“It goes to show it’s going well but let’s hope we get the best finish we’ve ever had as well over 12 or 13 games because that would be really interesting.

“As long as we pick up a few points in between then it will be interesting, but nothing is won in October.

“There’s a lot of hard work to do and we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing.”

And Flynn again will be doing his best to manage expectations around Rodney Parade the longer the Exiles remain in promotion contention.

“The glass is either full or it’s completely empty, there’s no half measure with Newport County AFC,” he added.

“You’ve got to keep the expectancy levels where they should be, but I’d much rather the glass be full than empty.

“What the fans think is their prerogative – my glass is half-empty and half-full.”

Crawley, managed by Italian Gabriele Cioffi, who took over from Harry Kewell in September, are 10th in the table.

“The new manager has come in and got some good results straight away, so that’s helped things,” said Flynn.

“They can beat anybody on their day and proved that when they went to Lincoln.

“It’s going to be a tough game away but we’re going there trying to get the three points.”

Ex-County playmaker Mark Randall and former loanee Reece Grego-Cox are part of the Crawley squad.
