NEWPORT County AFC are comfortably through to the FA Cup second round after a 2-0 win at Metropolitan Police FC but manager Michael Flynn was far from happy with his team’s display.

Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt both found the net to put County in control at Imber Court but the hosts, who had Louis Birch sent off late on, had several chances to make life difficult in an even first half.

Goalkeeper Joe Day struggled with the slippery conditions at times but he made several important saves before Amond, who had already hit the post and had a goal disallowed for offside, headed in the opener on 41 minutes.

Matt slammed home the second after Tyreeq Bakinson’s shot was well saved to kill the contest three minutes after the restart.

The visitors could have won more comfortably with substitute Antoine Semenyo also denied a goal by the offside flag but Flynn was far from happy with his men.

“We’re through and that’s the only positive, along with the clean sheet, because I thought we were poor,” he said.

“We were sloppy and we were too open. If that was a league game we would have lost.

“It was nothing to do with the conditions and nothing to do with their attitude, it was just a poor performance and I wasn’t happy with what I saw.

“We should have scored eight but we didn’t take our chances.

“I’m allowed to be disappointed, even when we do win, and it shows how far we’ve come.

“I’ve got that much faith and belief in them that when they fall below the standards [that I expect] it’s disappointing.

“But they’re a great group, they listen and they want to improve so let’s just hope it was a one-off.

“The main thing is that we’re through, we’ve made a little bit more money for the football club and hopefully we can get a home draw in the next round.”

Flynn, who saw his team beat Leeds United in the third-round last season and take Tottenham Hotspur to a replay in round four, is eyeing another big tie in January.

“I’d love a home tie [in round two] because we’ve done a lot of travelling already this month,” he added.

“We all want a home draw and we want to get into the third round.”
