TOP scorer Jamille Matt hit his 10th goal of the season on Saturday and he’s determined to add to his tally against former club Plymouth Argyle in tonight’s Checkatrade Trophy tie.

The striker helped Newport County AFC through to the second round of the FA Cup with the second goal in the 2-0 victory over non-league Metropolitan Police.

With 10 goals in 21 appearances for the Exiles, Matt is on course for the most prolific season of his career.

And now he’s targeting another goal and another win against Argyle, which would ensure that County progress through to the next round of the Trophy.

“As a striker you always target at least double figures so I’m happy to get that early doors and hopefully I can add a few more,” said the 29-year-old.

“Podge [Padraig Amond] scored again as well [on Saturday] and he’s not far off [10 goals] as well.

“If we can keep nicking goals then it will put us in good stead in the league.”

The Exiles host Colchester United in League Two this coming Saturday as they look to reclaim a top-three spot.

But first up is the visit of League One strugglers Plymouth in the Trophy.

After losing at Swindon Town and beating Chelsea under-21s, County need a win tonight to make the knockout stage of the competition.

Derek Adams’ men cannot progress having lost to both their group matches but Matt expects his old side to put up a good fight.

The Jamaican-born forward scored seven goals in 14 appearances during a loan spell with the Pilgrims in 2016, helping them to the League Two play-off final.

“Our target is to progress to the next round so we want another victory,” said Matt.

“I wasn’t fully fit at Carlisle last week but I was desperate to play [on Saturday] and I’m desperate to play again.

“It’s my former club. I enjoyed my time down there. It’s a great club but, if I play, I’ll be looking to add to my goal tally and get us into the next round.

“But I know their manager well. He demands a lot from his players and I’m sure he’ll put out a team capable of getting a result.”

To do so, Matt knows County will have to improve on Saturday’s slow start against The Met.

“It wasn’t easy at all,” he added. “Met Police gave a good account of themselves but the most important thing for us was getting through to the second round and we’ve managed to that.

“We’ve started games sloppily in the last few weeks but one thing I don’t think you can question in the lads is the character we’ve got.

“We’ll always scored goals and me and Podge have managed to do that and got us through to the next round.

“We’re not happy with the chances they created but we’ve come away with a clean sheet and the longer the game went on we had quite a few chances so we’ll take the positives into the game on Tuesday.”
