GOAL hero Mark O’Brien says Newport County AFC are enjoying upsetting the odds as they close in on a place in the League Two play-offs.

O’Brien, the man who scored the goal that completed the Great Escape and kept County in the Football League back in 2017, set the Exiles on their way to a crucial win over Oldham Athletic at Rodney Parade last night.

His second goal for the club put Michael Flynn’s men ahead against the Latics and the second goal may also be credited to him after he deflected Robbie Willmott’s strike beyond visiting goalkeeper Zeus De La Paz.

The 2-0 win moved County from 11th to seventh in the table and they know that another three points at Morecambe on Saturday will secure a place in the play-offs.

O’Brien told BBC Radio Wales: “There’s been a lot of hard work that’s gone into this season and it’s the least we deserve, being in this position.

“We just hope now that we keep our heads screwed on and we get the job finished on Saturday.

“We’ve got great momentum and it was the same two years ago – everyone wrote us off in terms of staying in the league.

“We always knew that we had that inside us and if we put a good run together, anything could happen and anything is possible.

“We’re proving people wrong again and hopefully we can finish it off at the weekend.

South Wales Argus:

“There’s a different pressure this time and it’s a more enjoyable pressure,” added the captain.

“It’s a massive achievement for a club like Newport to be anywhere near the play-offs.

“Not many people gave us any chance at the start of the season, but we knew what we were capable of and we always knew that we had a great chance to do something really special this season.

“We’re starting to fulfil that now.”
