TODAY is the day for Newport County AFC as they target three points at Morecambe to clinch a place in the League Two play-offs, and goalkeeper Joe Day is convinced that they will handle the pressure.

County need a win at the Globe Arena this afternoon to guarantee a top-seven spot.

A draw will also be enough, as long as Exeter City don’t win at Forest Green Rovers, but the Exiles will be going for the victory.

And Day, the Sky Bet League Two player of the month for April, is confident that he and his teammates will rise to the occasion once again.

“If you look at the big games that we’ve had over the last few years, we’ve thrived on them and that’s a massive credit to the squad we’ve got here,” said Day, who has been a key man since his arrival at Rodney Parade in 2014.

The 28-year-old stopper helped County complete the Great Escape from relegation in 2017 and to reach the FA Cup fourth round last year and the fifth round this season.

“We’ve got to take confidence from the experience we’ve had in high pressure games before,” he added.

“They’ve brought out the best in us in the past.

“But FA Cup games are one-off matches and they are almost easier to get up for and to raise your game.

“To finish in the play-off places over the course of a whole season is a very big achievement and hopefully we can finish the job.

“It’s massive that things are in our own hands and we know if we win, we’re in the play-offs.

“We have to go into the game full of confidence. Nerves won’t play a part.”

South Wales Argus:

A nine-game unbeaten run has propelled Michael Flynn’s men into the play-off places for the first time since before Christmas and they are determined to hang on to seventh spot.

“For the majority of the season inconsistency is what has plagued us and that’s why we’ve had to leave it so late for the run we’re on now,” said Day.

“It’s all about timing, we’ve timed it right, and hopefully we can keep our confidence and momentum going.

“From the strikers all the way back to the defenders, the desire to get clean sheets during the last six, seven, eight, nine games and the run we’ve been on has been incredible.

“We need to approach this game in the same manner. Defensively if you’re sound it always gives you a chance and we know the attacking threat we’ve got with our strikers.”

Day is one of 12 players out of contract this summer and a defeat today could signal the end of his County career.

“It’s not anything I’m thinking about at the moment, if I’m totally honest,” he said.

“We’ve got one massive game left and then if we make the play-offs, two more big games.

“I don’t want to be looking beyond that. I don’t want to distract myself from the task at hand.

“The summer is a long time and we can get things sorted then, but for now I’ll focus on the task at hand.

“It’s been a successful season, but we don’t want it to stop and we want to keep going. We’ve got one more cup final and we’ll see where it takes us.”
