Mickey Demetriou to stay as Newport County agree to sign Bristol City youngster

Demetriou’s contract ended on June 30 and he has been weighing up the offer of a new deal since the end of May.

He returned to the club for pre-season training last Thursday and was on the plane with the rest of the squad this morning as they departed for a week-long warm weather training camp in Spain.

And, while his new two-year contract is yet to be confirmed by the club, the Argus understands that the player has committed his immediate future to the club.

There should also be another new arrival this week with the Bristol Post reporting that a young Bristol City star is set to join County on loan imminently.

The signing has been agreed between the clubs and the player, believed to be a left wing-back, could be unveiled as soon as tomorrow.

Demetriou’s presence on board the plane to Spain was revealed by a Twitter post from teammate Padraig Amond.

The picture, which showed the centre-back sat between manager Michael Flynn and assistant boss Wayne Hatswell, was later deleted.

It’s not known whether the Robins player was on the flight.

The Bristol Post reported today: “We understand that a young Bristol City player will be joining Newport County on loan later on Monday.

“We don’t know who currently, we’re working on that, but it could be Rory Holden, Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, George Nurse or Jojo Wollacott.

“City are currently wrapping up several loans before they head out to the US and, as loans manager Brian Tinnion has explained, the club has now sorted out six league loans for their young players – and there could be more to come.”

Flynn, who has previously signed Shawn McCoulsky, Antoine Semenyo, Tyreeq Bakinson and Cameron Pring on loan from Bristol City, is still on the hunt for a specialist left-back to replace the departed Dan Butler.

And he’s also looking to bring in another attacking player and at least one more midfielder after returning from Spain.

The first team players and management will spend five days training in Murcia, with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Egyptian Premier League team Al Ahly FC also confirmed for the camp.

“The lads are going to be working very hard,” said Flynn.

“It's going to be two, sometimes three sessions a day. We are going to get them in peak condition.”

An Exiles XI, made up mainly of youth team players, will travel to Moreton Rangers for a pre-season friendly on Friday.

County will also send a side to Undy Athletic next Tuesday before the first team take on Shrewsbury Town in Ludlow the following day.
