NEWPORT County AFC are up to second in League Two after a 2-0 win against 10-man Forest Green Rovers, but manager Michael Flynn believes there is still more to come from his side.

Goals from Padraig Amond, after four minutes, and Ryan Haynes, in the 92nd, sealed the win at The New Lawn after Joe Wollacott was sent off for the hosts just before the half-hour mark.

Flynn was delighted with a first away win of the season but felt his side could have been better.

“I thought we were excellent today,” said the Exiles boss. “We were very professional out of possession. But in possession, I thought we were a little bit sloppy.

“We were looking for the killer pass too much when we should have just been patient because you always know against 10 men that they’ve got nothing to lose and they are going to have a go at you in the last 10 minutes.

“That’s what they did and where we were sloppy and losing the ball it was giving them a chance to counter.

“We’ll work on that. We’ll work on keeping the ball and moving the opposition around and the opportunity will come then.”

Joseph Mills almost levelled for Rovers in the second half when he hit the inside of the post with a vicious free-kick.

“It was a sloppy free-kick to give away and I turned to Hats [assistant Wayne Hatswell] and said, ‘he’s going to put this straight in the top corner’ and that would have summed it up,” said Flynn.

“It would have been so frustrating because we had so many opportunities and I wouldn’t have been very happy.

“But we ground it out, we defended superbly and it’s a massive three points.”

South Wales Argus:

Flynn was pleased with how his team pressed a talented Rovers side early on, which led to the opener and the red card when Abrahams caught out Wollacott on both occasions.

“We know how they play,” he added. “They’re a good team and they’ll cause problems for a lot of teams.

“Their movement is good and they’re good on the ball but we were the better team, even with 11 men.

“We knew we wanted to press them high and get in their faces and, for me, it’s a big win because I’ve got a lot of time for Mark and Forest Green – the way they play and how he is.

“It’s a tough place to come so I’m delighted with the win.”
